I am trying to see how much the United States government spend on hurricane katrina relief efforts.
I'm not sure where justagrandma got her numbers from but here is one that says $127 BILLION as of August 2007. From some of the stuff I've read, I'd be willing to bet on this number being more accurate.
A large number of victims from Hurrican Katrina are suing the Federal government for outrageous amounts of money. Many in the billions and trillions and one ridiculous request for $3quadrillion! This was a natural disaster that the government could not prevent and while I feel sorry and believe some relief should be given, I don't believe any of them should be made millionaires.
It's all baseless. By the way, suing the government means they are suing all of the citizens. They should not get one penny!
I understand about the human factors such as people building on flood plains etc, environment agency not putting out warnings etc etc.
What i want to know is what really caused the floods, and how far is global warming to blame? or is it not?
The main reason for the exceptionally wet weather in the UK this summer has been that the Jet Stream is located further south than usual. Normally during the summer it woulld pass between Scotland and Iceland, this year it's been running across Wales, Central England and out across the North Sea to Scandinavia.
The jet stream is a high altitude, fast moving stream of air and it can act as a barrier to other weather systems. Normally in the UK summer arrives from southern Europe but this year it's arrival was blocked. At the same time, the jet stream brings in a series of depressions from the Atlantic bringing rain with them.
Global warming has a part to play in that warmer temps mean greater evapouration of water from the seas and oceans, this subsequently falls as rain (or snow). Globally rainfall levels have increased and it's a trend that's set to continue. A few years ago the Met Office predicted a nine fold increase in flooding events by the end of the century, now is probably a good time to move to a house on a hill, away from streams and rivers.
If diabetic is planning to attend a walk a thon or outdoor activities…, what preparation need to occur to ensure health safety ???
What are the emergency health interventions for Hypertension ?
if a diabetic is planning to walk and he/she is taking insulin or any anti-diabetic meds, then he/she needs to have snacks before the walk-a-thon or outdoor acitivities….
in this way, the medication he is taking will lower his blood sugar while the snacks that he will take will keep him from too much hypoglycemia…
for hypertension?? just rest… watch out for extremes of blood pressure. just make sure, he/she takes her usual routinary meds so as to prevent crisis.
Two parallel glass plates are placed in contact and illuminated from above with the light of wavelength 580 nm. As the plates are slowly moved apart and the refelected light is observed, darkness occurs at certain separations. What are the distances (other than, perhaps, zero) of the first three of these separations?
The distance between the separations is a function of the wavelength of the light, and the distance of separation (which also affects the number of divisions or separations that you see).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any GPS devices that can tell you in real-time during emergencies and/or disasters where the safe evacuation routes and emergency shelters are located?
Thanks!
" I was wondering if anyone knows of any GPS devices that can tell you in real-time during emergencies and/or disasters where the safe evacuation routes and emergency shelters are located?"
To the best of my knowledge, there is NO GPS devices currently that offer real-time emergencies/disasters evacuation routes or information of emergency shelters.
This does not mean you can't make your own route and plans.
Some GPS system will allow you to store certain routes you prefer and use it when you feel necessary.
This does not mean that the routes you have planned could be the most efficient routes during an emergency evacuation.
Real Time traffic could help but it only offers alternative surface street routes which I would bet would also be packed.
Best way is to have your GPS ready and when and if you need it, it will reroute you if you chose to drive a different direction than the route it has suggested.

As far as emergency shelters goes, it is easy, just contact your local government agency and ask for the address of all the emergency shelters near you and input them in your GPS address book or favorites.
I would bet most schools, libraries, convention centers etc would be a good place to go in an emergency.
Problem is the streets and shelters in major cities are not design to accommodate everyone and during an emergency, even the best GPS is not going to get you around or out of the city traffic jams, it maybe good if you are heading out of town or if you are in a rural area.
It is a great question and I bet sooner or later someone will come up with a program that will allow evacuation routes and emergency shelters information, but for now, the demand is not enough to justify the cost of adding such features.
If you wish to try to input your own emergency evacuation routes or see how well a GPS function during those conditions, you can rent a GPS from GPS4Rent http://www.gps4rent.com to try without the need of committing to a certain model, find the model that fit your needs best and than take the plunge and buy one from Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc.
