  • Why are people always comparing Katrina to other disasters?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under katrina | 27 Comments »

People have been asking questions about the fires in California and possible government help and I see people answering concerning what happened and is happening with Katrina. Why are people wanting to compare the two when they are totally different disasters and require different responses?
I guess my biggest question is why people are upset and mad over help for California? I see answers that go ‘the gov. shouldn’t, they didn’t do this and that for Katrina’. Shouldn’t we all have learned from Katrina?

I have a few ideas. The first one is just plain, old-fashioned ignorance. By that I mean, they believe everything they hear spoken by some political talking head on the evening news, rather than investigating the facts for themselves and forming their own conclusions.

The other idea is that some believe all catastrophes are the same. No, they are not. They’re as different as, well, fire and water…

How do i stop paying emergency tax?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under emergency | 22 Comments »

I currently have the tax code BR and after checking i found it to be an emergency tax code. I have been in my current job 4 1 month and havn’t got a P45 from my last job. What can i do to avoid paying any more emergency tax?

When did you finish your last job? by law your ex employer must supply a P45 if tax was deducted. If you have this your new employer can use the correct tax code and you will get a tax repayment when you are next paid. Quickest option

Otherwise you need to fill in a P46 will details of your employments up to 6 April 2006 and it will be handed in to the tax office that deals with your current employer. Your next wage will be on a week or month one basis which means you will pay the correct tax in that month but the overpaid tax from April to now will need to be reclaimed. Then I suggest keeping a copy, going into your local tax office and hassling them until they ring the other office and the correct code issued.

Would I be required to leave in a mandatory evacuation due to hurricanes or other storms?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under evacuation | 2 Comments »

I’ll be 17 this storm chase season and it’s going to be my first year filming storms and I’m really excited. I’ve always been fascinated with tornadoes and major hurricanes. Would I be required to leave in a mandatory evacuation? If it’s required and I don’t leave, what would be charged with and what would be the legal penalties? Sources?
    I enjoy filming severe storms.

What they will do, is like those people on the island in Texas. They tell you to go, you refuse, then you call for help during the storm and they tell you tough S**T we are not coming.

Who’s heard of the Boston treacle flood?

Did you know that in 1919, a huge tank of treacle burst and flooded the whole of downtown Boston in boiling molasses?

    Freaky, Titanic was 1912.

News to me. Isn’t life strange?

How would you organize a paper concerning the breakdown of civility during hurricane Katrina?

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2009 and filed under katrina | 1 Comment »

I need to write a 5-6 page paper about the generally broad topic of the loss of "civility" or "civic virtue" post hurricane Katrina and I’m looking for some organization ideas. I’m not asking for you to write a paper for me. I’m just looking for some short points, possibly 3 or 4, that I could explore. Thanks

The race issue caused some tensions
The lack of government response caused a lot of anger

The Iowa flooding was compared to the Katrina floods which was devastating where were the celebs to help them?

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2009 and filed under floods | 11 Comments »

What a difference in responses? I guess all the media coverage was a part of it - celebs love free publicity. I was reminded again of this with Gustav approaching. Good to see Bobby Jindal in La I think he is a positive for that state.

It’s because Iowans aren’t screaming for trailers, food, water, clothing, and debit cards like what happened in New Orleans. The celebrities always hop in when it is a destination they like. Look at NYC on 9-11. Where were the celebrities when we had the Oklahoma City bombing? Nowhere. They were nowhere to be found for Iowa either. No telethons, no contributions. It makes me sick. I have made a concerted effort not to go to the movies because I hate Hollywood so much.

Are you suppose to release the emergency brake first or shift gears first after you start your engine?

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2009 and filed under emergency | 3 Comments »

Does it matter that my emergency brake is operated by the foot?

Get in the right habit from the start. Start the car,
put it in gear, PLACE a foot on the brake pedal,
    THEN release the emergency brake.

The reason for this is that if you have the habit of
releasing the brake first, you may also do that
from your habit when parked on a hill. Many
have damaged their car, and others by this habit.
This technique used to be taught to new drivers
back in the day of the standard transmission
where you also had to use a clutch. People
had a good habit then, and had fewer times
    when damage was caused.
