  • 25 years after the Challenger disaster, where do you want the space program to go?

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2011 and filed under wikipedia disaster | 5 Comments »

25 years ago today, seven astronauts and the space shuttle Challenger were lost. They are not forgotten: Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis and Judith Resnik.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenger_disaster

Clearly, we’re at a crossroads for space exploration. The aging shuttle fleet is being retired and the Constellation project has been canceled (or at least indefinitely delayed). The bravery and sacrifice of many astronauts over the years has not been in vain. The scientific developments have had massive impact on modern life and technology. The inspirational voyages have had immeasurable impact in their illustration of the American spirit.

Where would you like us to go from here? Some would like the Constellation project restored. Some would like to turn space travel over to private business. What would you propose as the future of NASA and space exploration?
As an aside: does anyone remember what they were doing when they heard the news? If memory serves, I was in the second grade. We often watched shuttle launches live on TV.

I was at work when it happened and heard about it some time after 10AM. I remember it really affected me because up to that point I never dreamed a Shuttle Mission could ever go wrong. I watched the videos of it over and over in disbelief as I suppose many did. I remember it really affected everyone for a long time. Definitely a very depressing time for all the U.S. and NASA. I wondered about the Teacher Christa McAuliffe’s and how it must have affected her pupils. 25 years later, it would be interesting to hear what they went through and felt during the aftermath of that very unfortunate event.

I do hope NASA can continue space exploration. I would like to see a colony on Mars and wish I could go but if they ever get to that point I will be much too old. Could you imagine the ramifications of people actually living and thriving on another planet? Mars seems like the only possibility as the other planets are not even remotely possible for colonization. I understand that some planets give off such high radiation that would make human habitation inconceivable. Considering there is an atmosphere although thin perhaps there would be some protection from meteorites and such. I understand a moon base is in the works as a possible next step. I think we might be seeing more private enterprises tackling space. The Spaceship One Project was interesting but a permanent settlement on Mars is very exciting. Great question by the way.

pokemon platinum: is this a good team to fight maylene in the veilstone gym?

Lv. 37 Infernape - Flame Wheel, Ember, Fury Swipes, Mach Punch
Lv. 33 Staravia - Take Down, Aerial Ace, Wing Attack, Double Team
Lv. 29 Luxio - Spark, Bite, Charge, Swagger
Lv. 29 Floatzel - Crunch, Aqua Jet, Swift, Water Gun
Lv. 16 Togetic - Yawn, Sweet Kiss, Metronome, Magical Leaf

i have a 6th pokemon but its my HM slave

You could throw a ghost type in there. Ghost types are immune to fighting and normal type moves so that will help greatly when you battle her pokemon. Try not to get duskull since its pretty weak right away. See if you can trade someone for a misdreavus (DONT evolve it until it learns all of its moves because once its evolved, it wont learn anymore).
Staravia is nice to have but since it is also normal type, its going to have a hard time with the more powerful fighting moves. Give it one more level and evolve it into Staraptor and it should be of more help. One more level on Luxio will make it a Luxray which will be helpful too. If you’re going to keep Staravia, get rid of togetic since two flying types will give you trouble in the future. Floatzel is a nice water type to have but its only good stat is its speed. Try a pokemon that has a duel type that has water type in it (ex. Ice/Water, Ground/Water). I see how people say to get a Garchomp, I scream heck no. Ice type moves are common and if it gets hit by one, its all over. Try a Hippowdon, its got a great defense stat and is really helpful in my team.

Who’s Incharge of Adding New Languages to Wikipedia & to be Specific Who’s Responsible of adding (Egyptian) ?

Posted by admin on January 19th, 2011 and filed under wikipedia disaster | 2 Comments »

Just to explain few things ppl in Egypt speaks Arabic & "Egyptian" is Just another Arabic Accent or Dialect if you may say
Now wikipedia already had Arabic & Now it has "Egyptian" ( u’ll see it as مصري) which is by the way not the only "Egyptian" Accent in Egypt !!
In the Arabic world All Books, References, News & Documentary Channels (& for some reason usually Cartoons) are always done In Classical Arabic which is easily understood by everyone & it’s very hard to take any of them seriously if they weren’t
to Explain this it would be like if some one is writing in Wikipedia in this way ( cuz Southerns aint gonna make peace with them ppl of the North) ….[ok maybe it's a poor example :P] but I put it there to answer those who will say it’s a good thing to add the spoken live Language to Wikipedia
The real disaster is there’s over 20 countries (22 or 24 not sure) where ppl speak Arabic & every country has two or three accents at least ….so doing this will create a new 70 useless Languages where as the information in Classical Arabic is really poor (comparing to English) as it is ….. so it’s a CRIME really !

I don’t have a problem with Egyptians or their accent & I put a survey like this on (google ejabat) which is the arabic version of google Answers & everyone Especially Egyptians think that it’s ridiculous & stupid & they use the Classical Arabic page

Another thing that ”’some one”’ is spending a lot of time and effort to copy pages from Classical Arabic to "Egyptian" without adding anything new to it actually (it’s not like Egyptians r writing the pages in their accent cuz it wouldn’t make any sense if it’s already there in Classical Arabic)

What do u think of this in General …. & Do u think that there’s an agenda behind this (a political one to be specific) ?!!!

Ps: there’s no county where ppl actually speak Classical Arabic in their Daily life so it’s not like a certain country or accent is dominating the others & all countries recognize Classical Arabic as the official Language including Egypt which doesn’t recognize "Egyptian"

If I understand you correctly, your concern is that the Masry Wikipedia (currently ranked 112 on the "List of Wikipedias" - see link to English intro page below) will "siphon off" potential users, editors, and writers of the Classical Arabic Wikipedia (currently ranked #25). It’s a legitimate concern, since that’s exactly what it will do.

I would tell you that this is actually a good thing, because it will result in fewer writers in both Masry and Classical Arabic being sucked into Wikipedia’s general miasma of cultural degradation, and nowhere is it more important to prevent cultural degradation than in the Middle East. But I digress.

The important thing for you to understand is that the people who run "Wikipedia" (i.e., the Wikimedia Foundation along with a few high-ranking users) have virtually no appreciation for the complexity of Middle Eastern culture whatsoever. The same could be said of most African and Asian cultures. These people are mostly Americans, Europeans, and a few Australians; they’re not necessarily doing this to be mean-spirited, they’re simply ignorant of the issues involved because their own educational systems don’t teach them about these things.

That’s not to say there wasn’t some controversy in this particular case; it’s Wikipedia, so controversy is always assumed. If you’re looking for the controversy, it’s on the third link below. One or two users made the point that Masry is a dialect, much as "Australian English" and "British English" are dialects of English, but they were either outnumbered, or the "language committee" decided they were wrong.

Unfortunately, now that the wiki has been established and is "in production," the chances that it will ever be removed are very close to zero.

How do people get caught in floods and bushfires and end up dying?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2011 and filed under floods | 10 Comments »

I mean like the floods and bushfire you get in Australia. Why do people stay inhat area when they know what’s coming?

Firstly in regards to flooding, the problem comes down to that the Toowoomba flood was a flash flood (the term "tsunami" is incorrect because a "tsunami" is a surge of water caused by a seismic activity, e.g. earthquake, so inland tsunmai’s are possible, but the Toowoomba situation was a flash flood).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%932011_Queensland_floods#Toowoomba_and_the_Lockyer_Valley

That explains the situation. In basic terms the ground was saturated from continuous rain and then torrential rain over a short period led to the flooding, it wasn’t predicted because people aren’t continuously monitoring the saturation of the ground across all of Australia. So they didn’t know the flash floods were coming.

Poor planning is also to blame here, as the video footage clearly showed many buildings were built within river flood ways (where the flood waters flow). Unsure about Qld, but building in this area is not permitted in WA anymore due to the dangers for buildings, and downstream effects of altering the flood way.

Other deaths in floods can be contributed to people thinking the water isn’t as deep as it is or is flowing quicker than they think it is (many people try to cross water and are caught unaware by the depth or flow of the water). Other issues are that floods transport heavy things. Cars were transported downstream in Toowoomba, these are very heavy items that can easily crush or kill humans.

In regards to bushfires most deaths are due to either people staying and defending their homes (unfortunately a lot that stay aren’t probably prepared or trained) and recently many deaths occurred with those trying to escape. Either roads were blocked by falling debris or the smoke made visibility hard. A case in WA involved truck drivers dying, and they died after being told to proceed by the authorities when it wasn’t actually safe.

Also remember in regards to bushfires a big issue is smoke. Many people focus on the flames, but it is the smoke that may knock you unconscious or starve you of air to breath (leaving you at the mercy of the fire). Also dehydration occurs, and this may lead to people making bad decisions or again passing out. So their are many risks involved with staying for bushfires and unfortunately many people stay worried about their homes when they aren’t fully ready.

As a last note, it generally is the elderly and young who are at most risk during these natural disasters too … they are not as mobile and their decision making skills aren’t always at the same level of others.

    Manage emergencies.

What can I do in the military that is involved with Emergency Management for both Enlisted and Officer?

Posted by admin on January 10th, 2011 and filed under emergency management | 2 Comments »

None of those really involve Emergency Management…

Emergency Management is the people who plan and maintain a facility, town, city, county, base?, and other things during a disaster, attack, and etc.

    Enlisted:

Air Force: Pararescue Jumper (PJ) Pretty much EMT’s with machine guns. Navy: Rescue Swimmer, they rescue people in and out of the ocean and do emt/paramedic work. Also in Coast Guard.

    Officer:

Search and Rescue pilot, not too many others!

Name of this MOVIE anyone? disaster-Virus?

Posted by admin on January 7th, 2011 and filed under wikipedia disaster | 3 Comments »

    Okay, so…
I don’t really know if I have mixed up a few movies in my mind because I have watched a lot of similar ones. But from what I can remember..Here’s the plot
A man who has gone for a holiday to an Asian or an African country and gets on a plane to return to America…He has been infected with a deadly virus unknown to the Americans. He (if I can remember properly) coughs up and dies on the air plane….
Now…Unintentionally all the other people on the plane also gets infected by this virus…
Heres the tricky part…I can’t really remember what exactly happens next..
Its either that all the passengers and staff on board are quarantined but one escapes and spreads the disease from one person to another
    OR
the passengers are not quarantined and all of them spreads the virus around more rapidly from one to another…Then the rest of the story is about finding out all the infected people, finding an antibody and treating them…The last victim however is found in a shanty place looking helpless.
I don’t really know if it is a critically acclaimed movie, any of the actors, when it was made or any production information of that sort….
It has really been bugging me a lot the past few days..I tried Google, Wikipedia and all sorts of stuff..Nothing worked…
    Thanks a lot everyone! :)
Would really appreciate if you could help me out with this
    No, ‘Buzzkill youth’…
    Thats not the one…
    Thanks anyway :)
definetly Outbreak, starring Patrick Dempsy and Dustin Hoffman

What are some perks of working for a Office of Emergency Management?

Posted by admin on January 5th, 2011 and filed under emergency management | 2 Comments »

3 types of offices: City of Houston, Galveston County, and City of League City; or your own equivalent.

What are some perks of working in these places?
Well Will as I believe some people just aren’t trying hard enough and if they are so inclined on getting a job I could find them one this week.

Most are just to stuck up and are expecting the same pay as they were getting before the bubble busted.

You have a J.O.B. — which is more than a lot of people these days. There are no special perks.
