  • What is it like to major in emergency medicine?

Posted by admin on January 16th, 2012 and filed under emergency | 2 Comments »

I am a high school student currently wanting to peruse a career in Emergency Medicine. I was wondering if anyone is currently working in Emergency Medicine and can give me some tips on it, and what to expect on the job. Thanks!

You don’t major in any medical specialty. Majoring is for undergraduate work, and you can major in anything and still go to medical school.

In med school, we all learn the same stuff. Following med school graduation, we do a residency in our chosen specialty, and that is where you may start learning emergency medicine.

That was my second choice for a specialty, but there was too much non-emergent stuff for my liking. I ended up in anesthesia, so all of my patients require critical care. Most don’t until I get to them, of course.

Good luck with your studies, and I hope you fulfill that dream!

How long is emergency room wait if you are overdosing on pills?

Posted by admin on August 7th, 2011 and filed under emergency | 5 Comments »

I know in emergency rooms sometimes there is a longgg longgg longgg wait, but what if you run in and you are overdosing on persay 15 Excederin P.M., would they still make you wait or rush you to get your stomach pumped?

If they think you’re really immediately in danger (like you’re unconcious or you can’t talk or you’re not breathing or you’re vomiting) they’ll get you in immediately.

If you’re not dying right now, then you’ll have to wait like everybody else.

    EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

my throat is all smooth and at the top i have a lump in my throat the size of a golfball it hurts to touch it or bend my neck forward should this be taken to a hospital or should i be concerned? my grandma thinks i should go to the emergency room but my mom says leave it but i dont know. im only 11 and im a girl so what should i do…ouch

I’m not sure if you’re talking about the inside or outside of your throat, but either way you should see a doctor, if not tonight in the ER tomorrow for sure. It could be a swollen lymph node, tonsillitis, or even a thyroid issue, without knowing the exact location it would be hard to guess which, but because it is so swollen and sore it should be addressed and treated as soon as possible to help prevent any further damage or symptoms.

    Good luck!

Posted by admin on May 28th, 2011 and filed under emergency | 4 Comments »

My father is in the merchant marines, military sealift command. And we need to contact him asap, it’s a family emergecy. How do we contact the merchant marines to get in reach of a family member in an emergency? Is there a particular number? There ought to be…

Call the Red Cross, They can get a message to him immediately.
(I am surprised he has not told you this– all military families are told this on induction. )

What is the protocol for a medical emergency on a commercial airliner?

Posted by admin on May 24th, 2011 and filed under emergency | 2 Comments »

I am writing a story that involves a medical emergency in the cabin of an American Airlines flight and I wish to know the exact procedure the captain and first officer goes through to file a medical emergency, from reporting it to landing. Please be as detailed as possible.
Edit: This is assuming there is no doctor on board and the patient is starting to become insane/out of control.

Well, usually a flight attendant calls us to let us know something is going on. They will ask if there are any medical professionals on board. Then, we have the flight attendant fill out a sheet with all the information on the patient. We then call a service called Medlink, which is a department in a hospital that we have a contract with. They ask us what the problem is, how long the flight will be, and where we will be landing. They then make a determination whether we can continue or have to divert to get the person treatment. If they tell us to continue to the original destination, they then take the liability if something goes wrong. They also call ahead for us to have an ambulance waiting if we determine it’s needed. They also follow up on the patient and make sure they are taken care of.

Sometimes they ask us to divert, and we pick a close airport that has services and land there to get them help. Usually we tell ATC we have a medical emergency on board, and they will give us priority for landing. I’m not sure what you mean by exact procedure, as the landing and getting to the gate will be the same as normal, except we might be in a city we don’t normally fly to.

    Hope that helps you.

Is it acceptable to go to the emergency room after an emergency has passed?

Posted by admin on May 21st, 2011 and filed under emergency | 3 Comments »

I’ve had recurring emergency symptoms like chest pain and the inability to breathe for about 2 weeks. I also passed out today. However, I feel ok enough right now, but my friends want me to go to the emergency room. Is it acceptable to go after an emergency has passed since these symptoms keep coming and going anyway?

Go to the ER if your insurance pays for it. If you had a heart attack earlier or a small stroke, then blood tests can be performed as well as an EKG. I’d say just go to the ER now.

What would happen to an emergency driver if they hit and killed someone whilst driving to an emergency?

Just wondering what would happen to a police officer or ambulance driver or a fire man if they were driving to an emergency with their blues and twos on and hit and killed someone with their vehicle.

They are still obligated to drive with due regard for safety and can be held accountable for their actions if they are negligent.

How much does it cost to go to the Emergency Room for an ankle sprain?

Posted by admin on December 19th, 2010 and filed under emergency | 2 Comments »

If you have been to the ER or an Urgent Care center for an ankle sprain or other similar injury, what was the final bill with the doctor fees, x-rays, emergency room charges, braces, crutches, etc?

I have heard of some pretty ridiculous charges from the ER, and I am wondering how outrageous the costs really are.

Patients also often ask me this question and I am wondering what people’s experience is with the bills they receive from the emergency room. What was your TOTAL Emergency Room bill?

    Thanks!

    How about some stitches?

ER, total bill before insurance $1500ish
Urgent care- TOTAL for office visit, stitches, prescription, tetanus shot. $65.

We try to avoid the ER like the plague. In the first case, we were just grossed out because he had an avulsed flap of skin that kept waving around in the breeze. Sadly, the Urgent Care place was closed.

How come miners dont construct an emergency hole in case of a disaster?

Posted by admin on December 17th, 2010 and filed under emergency | 3 Comments »

How come the miners dont make a hole in case theres an accident?
Can someone explain to me why the people that own mines dont have an emergency exit …I know they have an emergency safe room down there but can they have a hole where they can rescue the miners and dont take 2 mos?

There were emergency shafts, but in the case of a cave-in (which is what happened) it’s not always possible to get to them. The safe rooms were designed to act as shelters in the event miners couldn’t get out.

As for why it took so long to get them out, you have to remember the ground isn’t that stable or solid anymore due to the mining, and then it collapsed. This means trying to dig could cause further instabilities, and additional cave-ins - it could have also collapsed the safe room itself. So you have be careful and go very slowly.
