Our garage used to flood every time it rained heavily. Our yard had poor drainage (which we’ve since fixed) and the soil is basically clay, so the water would pour into the garage via the floor, through the siding and drywall etc. This caused our exterior siding to rot and also our interior drywall to mold and rot. What other potential damage could the water have caused? What should we keep an eye out for when we are repairing the damage? Thanks.
Keep an eye out for wood rot. if any of the boards are soft instead of firm you should replace that 2×4, especially the ones tying the building to the floor.
My house is over 20 years old and everything is original to the house. We are on a septic system but the city checked it out when we bought it 5 months ago and said nothing is wrong with it. Every time I wash my laundry the toilet in the guest bathroom floods. It smells like a mix of fabric softener and bile. What is wrong with my plumbing and what can I do to fix it?
It would be difficult to give you an exact answer without looking at the layout but you most likely have a partial blockage around (just after down stream) the toilet waste line causing the back up into the toilet.
There is a tremendous amount of water coming from the washer and when it hits that area the plumbing as it is cannot handle it ……….
You should have a plumber check this out
I lived in Wesr Cumbria through the 1990s and really welcomed the warmth and friendliness of the people there.
Just how widespread are the floods there?
My heart goes out to the people there.
My boyfriend’s dad lives very near Cockermouth, which is apparently flooded, but I have no idea how widespeard they are. My heart goes out to them all too. Just before Xmas too.
Does anyone know about good charities to help in the current situation in Iowa? I want to make sure my money is helping people in trouble.
We are in Waverly, Iowa and have had our house destroyed by the flood and I agree with the people above, Red Cross has been great. They come around twice a day offering food and water and a smile. It really helps to have a hot meal and something to drink when you are trying to recover from such a terrible loss. I have not heard if anything else has been set up, but Red Cross has been a great help.
I have had a few dreams about floods. They are never threatening, and the water is always shallow, and I can easily pass over them.
Water in dreams is a universal dream symbol for emotions. Floods in dreams reflect rising emotions. The fact that your flood is shallow and non-threatening is a good sign.
Feelings in dreams are never disguised. So, whatever is happening in your waking life to cause the "flood" in your dreams, is clearly something which you feel you can "wade through."
If the waters start to rise higher in your dreams or become a concern, be careful. Identifying the waking life source of the flood will help you not only see it coming, but make it easier to weather and overcome.
Good luck!
I live in central Florida where it tends to flood every summer. I want to start growing some Marijuana plants that need to be well hidden, so they must be grown outside. The water gets to about 12 inches at worst. So, can 420 be grown in pots? Is there any way to do this without taking it inside?
I have some money I’m willing to spend if I need to
Use redwood instead of treated lumber as the chemicals in the treated lumber could kill the plants.
I am doing a coursework piece on Extreme Environments, namely deserts. I’ve been given the task of drawing of drawing and labeling a diagram to explain how flash floods can occur in a desert. I’ve looked on the given websites, but I can’t find any decent information. Can you help me? Thanks.
They occur due to very large amounts of water, relative to the volume of the available stream or river channel, arriving very quickly.
Some deserts more or less always have difficulties with water supply. Normally, it’s a matter of their being too little. However, on the occasions when it does rain, it can pelt it down in bucket loads. That lot hits the high ground and finds its way downhill, much of it along things usually called wadis; normally dried out water channels. Abruptly, given enough water, a wadi can change from being baked hard ground to a raging torrent. When the water suffices to more than fill the whole channel, that it floods out in a flash; a flash flood.
Contact to meet and monitor. For as the flood victims have care takers for the Old and the widows and the Children. Left by the parents in these floods.
Come to nurse the wounds.
It is mosts people’s duty to help their neighbor and the poor or their own cries wont be heard.
Where is this docuemented so people can help out? Most cases like this are in the news.
Humans have been able to tract down typhoons, chase a hurricane, build defensive walls floods. But all these efforts have not really eliminated these natural catastrophes altogether. Somehow we just keep parrying the attacks and roll with the punches, so to speak. Oftentimes, we in the typhoon prone area, like the Philippines, get knocked out. Can you help?
There is nothing you can do to stop nature. As far as flooding, there are certain things that can be done to mitigate damage, such as through the use of flood walls, dikes, levees, and, to an extent, dams.
Your best bet is to remain vigilant, monitor the weather, and heed warnings when they are issued.
We’ve been helping family and friends recover from the floods. We donated to the Red Cross through their BDO account. Now friends from abroad are asking what is the best organization to send their financial aid to. Off the top of my head, I would say Philippine National Red Cross and the Ayala Foundation. Please share your suggestions with me.
jd, what is your bad experience with red cross?
IF WANT YOUR DONATIONS TO REACH ITS RIGHTFUL RECEIVER/S, I WOULD SUGGEST SENDING IT TO SAGIP KAPAMILYA (ABS-CBN) OR GMA (NETWORK) KAPUSO FOUNDATION. YOU CAN COUNT ON THESE TWO FOUNDATIONS!
