  • Why were there so pitifully few black volunteers cleaning up Louisianna and Mississippi after Katrina?

Posted by admin on November 13th, 2009 and filed under katrina | 7 Comments »

My church volunteered twice to clean up and rebuild after Katrina.I met and saw hundreds of volunteers. Only 2 volunteers were black. The homes we were rebuilding was in black neighborhoods. Some were appreciative, others didn’t say anything. What struck me was the 3 nice old black women whose homes we rebuilt who had sons there who didn’t lift a finger to help rebuild their own mothers’s homes. They just layed around and drank beer.

if what u are saying is true then that would really suck. I dont know the statistic of what race volunteer but it just make one more reason why blacks are frown upon.

Someone tell me why the Federal Goverment is responsible for the housing of Katrina victims?

I lived in New Orleans for 8 years prior to Katrina. I and everyone who lived there knew the dangers of having a hurricane enter the lake or what might happen in the event of torrential rains. No one in there right mind believed the levee’s would hold or that the pumps would get the water out fast enough. Now with all this knowledge before hand why is the Federal Goverment the scapegoat? What about the Mayor and the Governor? I’m not looking for flaming rants, I would like to fully understand why the Feds have to pay?

they declared it a state of emergency and asked for federal help, I live in St. Louis and they sent the national guard because we had an ice storm and the power was off for maybe 4 or 5 days, louisiana was much worse than that

Which type of federalism was being used during hurricane katrina and why?

Is there a way to donate clothing directly to victims of Katrina?

Posted by admin on October 25th, 2009 and filed under katrina | 7 Comments »

I recently moved so I am unpacking and finding many items of clothing that have barely been worn that I would love to give to someone in need. I worked in retail for years so I have many items that still have the tags on them. I also have growing children with new clothing that no longer fits them. Does anyone know of a church or an organization that was affected by Hurricane Katrina of which I could mail the items to? I would love to mail boxes of clothing directly to those who need them.
    Thank you so much!
It is amazing to me how many rude answers I am receiving. I have already given a great deal of money to the relief effort. I am simply looking for a church or small organization that would be happy to receive gently used or new with tags high priced clothing to those who would appreciate them. So if you can’t help with this effort that is still on-going then please do not reply to this question.
I am also planning on donating lamps, furniture, electronics etc…

Why did you wait so long?

The Katrina disaster in New Orleans decreased the ability of oil companies to purify crude oil into gasoline?

The Katrina disaster in New Orleans decreased the ability of oil companies to purify crude oil into gasoline. This caused:
    A. the supply curve for gasoline to shift inward.
    B. the supply curve for gasoline to shift outward.
    C. the quantity of gasoline demanded to move out along the demand curve.
    D. the quantity of gasoline supplied to move in along the supply curve.

    A. Katrina impacted supply capability, so the S curve shifted inwards.

Why are people always comparing Katrina to other disasters?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under katrina | 27 Comments »

People have been asking questions about the fires in California and possible government help and I see people answering concerning what happened and is happening with Katrina. Why are people wanting to compare the two when they are totally different disasters and require different responses?
I guess my biggest question is why people are upset and mad over help for California? I see answers that go ‘the gov. shouldn’t, they didn’t do this and that for Katrina’. Shouldn’t we all have learned from Katrina?

I have a few ideas. The first one is just plain, old-fashioned ignorance. By that I mean, they believe everything they hear spoken by some political talking head on the evening news, rather than investigating the facts for themselves and forming their own conclusions.

The other idea is that some believe all catastrophes are the same. No, they are not. They’re as different as, well, fire and water…

How would you organize a paper concerning the breakdown of civility during hurricane Katrina?

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2009 and filed under katrina | 1 Comment »

I need to write a 5-6 page paper about the generally broad topic of the loss of "civility" or "civic virtue" post hurricane Katrina and I’m looking for some organization ideas. I’m not asking for you to write a paper for me. I’m just looking for some short points, possibly 3 or 4, that I could explore. Thanks

The race issue caused some tensions
The lack of government response caused a lot of anger
