A whopping eight km (five miles radius). If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:
http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fukushima-simple-explanation/

And here is where you find factual status information:
http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2011/fukushimafull.html

And a slide presentation that describes the effects:
http://www.slideshare.net/iaea/radiological-monitoring-and-consequences-of-fukushima-nuclear-accident-2-june-2011

And here is a chart that helps make sense of the numbers:

First, learn how to spell pursue. Secondly, can handle watching a baby die or watching or hearing a mother heart wrenching cry when she see's her child dead? If so, expect for the worst. You will see all kinds of tragic accidents. You should major in Biology, and then go to Medical School. It would not make sense to study law for two to four years and then go take the MCAT. Make sure that is what you want in life, because you have a hard and long way to the ER. Can you handle blood, vomit, semin, plasmic secretations, vaginal secretations, etc?
References :
In Pre-Med now.

You don't major in any medical specialty. Majoring is for undergraduate work, and you can major in anything and still go to medical school.

In med school, we all learn the same stuff. Following med school graduation, we do a residency in our chosen specialty, and that is where you may start learning emergency medicine.

That was my second choice for a specialty, but there was too much non-emergent stuff for my liking. I ended up in anesthesia, so all of my patients require critical care. Most don't until I get to them, of course.

Good luck with your studies, and I hope you fulfill that dream!
References :
No you don't.....
References :
....I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander.
During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union.
I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration....

No. As a matter of fact, you don't need much training at all to just join your local volunteer fire department or rescue squad.

I tried to answer this question but I think comcast had to shut down their signal to get it turned off, internet is back but cable is still lost.

All that said, the actual alert was silent, no tones.
