  • How do i stop paying emergency tax?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under emergency |

I currently have the tax code BR and after checking i found it to be an emergency tax code. I have been in my current job 4 1 month and havn’t got a P45 from my last job. What can i do to avoid paying any more emergency tax?

When did you finish your last job? by law your ex employer must supply a P45 if tax was deducted. If you have this your new employer can use the correct tax code and you will get a tax repayment when you are next paid. Quickest option

Otherwise you need to fill in a P46 will details of your employments up to 6 April 2006 and it will be handed in to the tax office that deals with your current employer. Your next wage will be on a week or month one basis which means you will pay the correct tax in that month but the overpaid tax from April to now will need to be reclaimed. Then I suggest keeping a copy, going into your local tax office and hassling them until they ring the other office and the correct code issued.

You have to get in touch with the last company and ask the to issue you with a p45 then you take that to the tax office, if you still cant get hold of it then you take all your pay slips to date

Usually if you are on emergency tax you are on week1/month1 not BR- basic rate. BR is when you are employed by more than one person or you are employed by these people and are self-employed as well. I would phone up your local IR office and get then to sort it out, don’t wait for your employers or the IR to get back to you!

You should make sure that you get reimbursed once you get your code, use your p60 from the last time you got one and your tax code will be on it.

Your previous employer should have sent you a P45 by now. Ring whoever deals with payroll and ask them to issue it. If they won’t help, ring the tax office that used to deal with you (you should have a tax reference somewhere) and tell them you haven’t had a P45. They will "remind" your old firm what the penalties are.

your personnel department has a responsibility here. Just tell them and at the same time ask them for the contact details of the tax office you use because at the end of the financial year you will be able to claim other tax back because even once you are on the normal tax code, you will still be taxed as if you have been working a whole year. They will send a form, send it back and they will soon send a cheq to you. The less months you worked in the year the more you will get back. I got nearly £1500 that way. Your personnel dept probably wont know all the ins and outs on this

      Hi,

I used to work in payroll - you need your new employer to give you a P46a form to fill in, if you don’t have a P45.

However be aware you may not get a rebate on the excess tax you have paid for some time.
However, your employer should have submited the form and all back to normal within a month of you completing it.

I think you need to fill out a P44 or P46 (I remember it’s one either way)

Ring the local tax office, ask which tax office deals with your new employer. Call that office and request a tax return. Complete the return, send it to your employer’s tax office, and wait for them to process it. You should be due for a BIG FAT REBATE. Yee-hah!!!! Enjoy….

If your old employers are messing you about you should threaten to shop them into the Inland Revenue. Another person above correctly advised that an emergency code at the moment is acually 505L/Week 1 Month1. Speak to your local tax office if you do not get anywhere with previous employer but MAKE SURE you tell them you do NOT want to be put on a week 1 month 1 code, or you will not get your tax back until the end of the year.

You need to ask your current employer about it. They should be able to sort out your correct code.
