well it depends on how old the children were, in primary schools the children will know what it means when the fire alarm goes off and then you get them to line up sensibly and take them to a designated fire evacuation spot. but if the children are in nursery you would just tell them you need to go outside for a little bit, you need to remain calm because if you are acting nervous and stressed the children will pick up on this and feel scared aswell. if a child gets scared and upset just take there hand and tell them everything is ok and talk to them about whats going to happen when you are outside so they know what to expect References : NVQ level 2 in childcare and education
I would stay calm, remind them of what they need to do, and tell them it’s just a practice! That there isn’t a fire, you are just practicing so they will know what to do in an emergency. References :

i would follow protocol as directed by my manager -when in doubt, check your HR manual.
