  • Every time I wash laundry my toilet in the guest bathroom floods. Whats wrong with my plumbing?

Posted by admin on December 9th, 2009 and filed under floods |

My house is over 20 years old and everything is original to the house. We are on a septic system but the city checked it out when we bought it 5 months ago and said nothing is wrong with it. Every time I wash my laundry the toilet in the guest bathroom floods. It smells like a mix of fabric softener and bile. What is wrong with my plumbing and what can I do to fix it?

It would be difficult to give you an exact answer without looking at the layout but you most likely have a partial blockage around (just after down stream) the toilet waste line causing the back up into the toilet.
There is a tremendous amount of water coming from the washer and when it hits that area the plumbing as it is cannot handle it ……….
You should have a plumber check this out

You have a partial clog in the DWV pipe somewhere downstream of the washer but upstream of the guest bathroom. You can "snake" all the pipes yourself until you find it, and push it out, or you could pay a plumber to do it for you.

Plumbers might be the only people you have to pay that you really get your money’s worth for!

Your septic system may need to be pumped too.

Mark told you the correct answer.l am wondering just how the pipe got blocked. do you have young children? Are you missing and clothing? something fell in the drain pipe that caused the blockage. In all my years of construction l never heard of what happened to you.

As stated in other answers on here there could be a partial clog. Is this a front load washer? Front load washers have caused a change in plumbing codes. In the state I live in the code has been changed on washer drain line for a few years now. 3" pipe must be installed on the horizontal drain line to the washer connection. If your house is 20 years old the line will be 2". One other possible problem could be if there is a air admittence valve as the vent on the bathroom.Hope this helps.
