  • How much money or help did Haiti give to the USA for Hurricane Katrina?

Posted by admin on February 1st, 2010 and filed under hurricane katrina |

I think, and I may be wrong, but I think Haiti and every other nation gave the USA $0.00 after Hurricane Katrina.

Oh well, enough of the cold, hard facts….start loading the supply trucks for Haiti…its a thankless job but someone (USA) has to do it.

I completely understand what you are saying. It’s not that we don’t care but rather we have our own issues that need to be taken care of. 100,000 people die each year in the US because of inadequate insurance. But we wont send aid to that, why? Because it’s not a catastrophic event?

Why can’t everyone dontate 10 dollars to that cause as well?

Why must we help another government that can’t even help itself?

Haiti has a government… just because it is flawed and doesn’t serve and protect the people the way ours does, does not mean that we must feel obligated to extend ourselves to them.

I just do not like how we put more value on some lives than others because one creates a better headline than the other, when we could and should help both.

My husband is Haitian and my mother-in-law lives in Haiti, so I do have a personal tie to the country, I just don’t see how we are so quick to aid another while there are people here that could use the aid as well.

      And your point?
So, what, Haiti is a third world country, they can’t feed or care for their own people.
So because Haiti didn’t help us after Katrina, we’re okay with letting people just die… nice.

If you knew anything about Haiti, which it is clear that you do not, you wouldn’t have written such garbage. Haiti had nothing, now they have rubble on top of their nothing. Haitians could live quite comfortably on just what most North
      Americans throw in the garbage.

      Shame on you.

Haiti is a very poor nation. The USA is a nation blessed by Almighty God. There is no comparison between the two and do not let your heart grow cold. Have compassion for all people in need who are hurting.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. We would not expect money to be sent to one of the richest nations from the poorest in our ‘neighborhood’.

America has always helped in times of disaster, it may be harder now but hopefully the private institutions and charities will contribute without government money, but no doubt there will be government money sent. But to turn it around, I don’t know if there were any Haitian people who helped, but the government, not.

We also crushed their economy by making them dependent on working as sugar cane cutters as the foundation of their economy and supporting the Duvalier regime for 40 years to prevent any real progress. Then we imposed a quota on importing sugar to boost the US sugar farmers. This made sugar so expensive that the US switched to corn syrup as a sweetener and the world market for sugar collapsed. This caused the gov of Haiti to finally collapse and things have been bad ever since.

Reagan gave billions to farmers in tax incentives to grow corn when they could have been growing soy for export. Haiti was the indirect victim of a huge corporate welfare scam. Reagan ruined the sugar market in part in an attempt to crush Cuba’s economy which is also sugar based.

Obviously you are very much in the "dark" about Haiti. It is one of the poorest Countries in the Western Hemisphere.
And it sure sounds like you never were needy. Lucky for you. But shame on you for having such
      lack of compassion.

hi silly opinion 1, your country still owes the world for its bombing the Hiroshima Nagasaki people.. a cruelty the world would never forgive or forget..

do you know your fore fathers usurped the lands of the natives and settled here..? If your sense does not show you the past savage acts of survival by every rich nation, you better not read news and torment yourself with weird curses like this querry..

It is not the Haithi that you had insulted, you had insulted the great American culture that grew out of the blunders of the past into one of mature human civilisation, crying for democracy and liberty..

you have revealed to the wold that it is just not your successive govts that are hypocrites (unlike average American citizen) but many haughty ones like you, trying to pull every other nation down for your own vanity..

You would sure have hurt more american hearts than the others.. for the world has seen more cruelties by humans than the natural calamities and it may not surprise people that ones like you exist.

Your nation would have spent 100 times more to kill people in the name of peace, than helped needy ones to any significant measure. See your defense budget vis a vis Human Aid sanctions..

If you can remember that year Haiti had four hurricanes where thousands died.

i think you need to get researching on Haiti, they are a third world country, they live in poverty, just how do you propose that they come up with the amount of money needed by the USA after Katrina when they cannot even feed their population? I am sure Haiti would like to hear your ideas.

Also it is not just the USA helping them, other countries around the world are sending aid to them and thank god they are not as cold hearted as you or the whole population of haiti would be suffering even more!!!

Well, I don’t think that they probably donated anything, but I don’t think that you are really trying to ask a question, so I will make some statements on it. America does not donate money in the same aspect of you giving your Grandma a Christmas present. There is nothing altruistic about it. We do it because a lot of people believe that it is good for us to spread our way of life. There are very many articles written on this. You should check out the PNAC "Statement of Principles". We are trying to lead the World in the 21st century. I hate PNAC, if you get a chance, read some of the essays about invading Iraq written in 1999. But yeah, we do it to secure our role as the Worlds sole superpower.

I don’t know if Haiti gave in the relief of Katrina, but I do understand your frustration. This country that I so love should be ashamed for a long time to come for our response efforts to Katrina. There is no way a county of this magnitude and capabilities should have ever allowed such disaster to go unattended for so long.
The cold hard fact is that one has nothing to do with the other. Haiti needs help and we should help them.

Many, many nations gave aid to the US in response to Hurricane Katrina. Please, please look at this list and educate yourself. It may be a humbling experience: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_response_to_Hurricane_Katrina No, haiti was not one of these nations. The average citizen of Haiti lives on 1200 USD per year. They are not in a position to offer aid to the richest nation in the world (http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:00qbcXp0Vb4J:siteresources.worldbank.org/DATASTATISTICS/Resources/GNIPC.pdf+haiti+per+capita+income+2008&hl=en&gl=ca&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESh48Hk2Uwo1VUlKPte80egC3-5c67rsO0Xt2PyxEifHxpJT5Hd5gE8pbvKQL0aV8xyFwuwH0sJNI9MJ0aLE2E5N-VmdWwhDCM94O3D6MQpkV0ql52GYqatP0dsWFyUUCW9TqSiN&sig=AHIEtbTguAWW_d4CynLEVKKQQeKYpa34YA)

Nor is the US the only country offering aid to Haiti. Many other countries are helping. Google it.

Just thought I would offer some cold, hard facts.
