The fantastic book … The fantastic book ‘Impact Erebus’ by Gordon Vette (an Air New Zealand pilot/colleague of the crew) is the ultimate insight into this tragedy.
This book led to the royal commission being set up.
Put up the December … Put up the December, 1984 Queen Street Riot in Auckland if you can!
“Thank God it’s over!” The end of the school year, absolutely brilliant…let’s get over to Aotea Square to catch the free Friday night concert; The Mockers, The Herbs and DD Smash…
What I heard from a … What I heard from a friend who had been in the industry at the time was that the INS had been incorrectly programmed and that the full extent of the mistakes had been covered up.
What a surprise.
None the less you are correct about a series of errors. Bad weather and mountains are a bad combination for any pilot. Small aircraft are constantly running into them in Australia.
As it was put to me if the birds aren’t flying stay on the ground.
All that was … All that was changed was an INS waypoint. The crew was not told, at the time it wouldn’t have seemed like a big deal - the pilots would only decend with visual references anyway. Unfortunately the whiteout phenomenom obscured the mountain which “wasn’t supposed to be there”. Like many plane crashes, this one was the result of a series of unfortunate events.
